Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror to kolejna odsłona przygód Gabe’a Logana, człowieka do zadań specjalnych. W Jest to przede wszystkim strzelanina, ale można też doszukać się w niej kilku elementów skradanki. Dark Mirror to konwersja gry o tym samym tytule z PSP. Twórcy podkreślają, że chcą dać wszystkim fanom serii (także tym nie posiadającym handhelda Sony) możliwość zagrania w piątą część serii.

W Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror wcielamy się w Gabe’a Logana, wyszkolonego superagenta do zadań specjalnych, który pracuje dla pewnej, oficjalnie nie istniejącej, Agencji Stanów Zjednoczonych. Gabe musi stawić czoła niebezpiecznej grupie ludzi zwanej Red Section, która przygotowuje Projekt Dark Mirror, jak ochrzczona została przez nich broń masowej zagłady.

SF: DM przynosi ze sobą kilka nowości względem czwartej części (Syphon filter: Omega Strain). Po raz pierwszy możemy tu atakować kilku oponentów, którzy zostali zaopatrzeni w bardziej zaawansowaną Sztuczną Inteligencję. Potrafią dla przykładu zjeżdżać po specjalnych linkach, wykorzystywać elementy otoczenia podczas strzelaniny, osłaniać się oraz zachodzić nas od tyłu, przy jednoczesnym ostrzeliwaniu z drugiej strony.

Wersja na PlayStation 2 odznacza się lepszą oprawą graficzną w stosunku do odpowiednika na PSP. Tekstury zostały przerobione – powiększono je i uczyniono bardziej dokładnymi. W więcej szczegółów zostały też zaopatrzone postacie a poziomy są bogatsze w detale (lekko przemodelowano je, wykorzystując większe możliwości PS2). Udostępniono tryb widescreen oraz możliwość przełączenia na rozdzielczość 480p.

Twórcy skorzystali również z drugiej gałki analogowej w Dual Shocku. W końcu sterowanie było największą bolączką w wersji na handhelda. W przypadku odsłony na PS2 nie ma już tego problemu, a samo kierowanie poczynaniami Logana stało się dużo prostsze i bardziej intuicyjne. Gra zawiera około 30 misji w trybie dla samotnego gracza. Trybów wieloosobowych online (obecnych w wersji na PSP) już jednak tu nie znajdziemy.

Last year, we were completely enamored with Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. Sony Bend and SCE took Gabe Logan out of console retirement and placed him in an action packed portable title that really highlighted the PSP, showing what the system could do. Not only did it prove that a shooter could work on the system without a second analog stick, it featured a robust multiplayer mode that took advantage of the system's features. We liked it so much, we gave the title an Editor's Choice Award when it came out last March, and 2006's Game of the Year Award.

Obviously, when we found out that the title was making its way over to the PS2, we were excited to experience the game back on a console. We couldn't wait to see how the game controlled and if there were any changes that would be made to the PS2 title. Unfortunately, we were somewhat disappointed by what we found. While it's still an impressive title by all accounts, the lack of the online play and minor visual adjustments makes the port less than it really should've been.

Dark Mirror, of course, follows Gabe Logan around the world as he deals with a para-military group known as Red Section that has managed to get their hands upon a new secret weapon. Of course, this threatens the safety of the world, and requires the Agency's best agent, his partner Lian Xing and their fellow agents to defeat these terrorists before they can unleash its power. Across seven episodes and numerous chapters, Gabe and Lian will fight their way through dozens of enemies, collecting information and even discovering secrets of Gabe's past that return to haunt him. As Juan said in his review of the PSP title, the story itself isn't particularly original or unique, but the manner in which the tale is told is particularly striking, especially with its mix of flashbacks, narrative and voice acting that is impressive ........
